Detailed guides on government, bank, and festival holiday calendars in India
Public Holidays in India (also referred to as Central Government Holidays) consist of 17 compulsory gazetted days. These include national milestones like Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), along with key cultural and religious events such as Diwali, Dussehra, Good Friday, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Guru Nanak Jayanti.
State Wise Holidays are declared independently by respective state administrations under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. While national holidays are universal, regional festivals are designated locally. For instance, Pongal is a public holiday in Tamil Nadu, Onam in Kerala, Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, and Chhath Puja in Bihar.
Government Holidays are split into two groups: 1. Gazetted Holidays: Mandatory holidays that apply to all central government employees, public sector undertakings, and major institutions. 2. Restricted Holidays: Optional holidays (restricted list). Employees can select a specific number of days (usually two) from this list to celebrate local festival holidays matching their cultural traditions.
Our portal features dedicated feeds for Bank Holidays India (determined by RBI schedules and state announcements) and School Holidays India (inclusive of summer/winter vacations, mid-term breaks, and regional state boards schedules). These schedules vary state-by-state, so we advise filtering your calendar choice by region.
Our Long Weekend Planner groups contiguous public holidays that align directly before or after weekends. It also points out "bridge dates" such as a Friday sandwiched between a Thursday holiday and a Saturday. By taking a single planned day off, you can gain a 4-day trip window, which is ideal for domestic vacations!
